  • The good news is you are not required to be highly educated to become a Radio Jockey or RJ but you do need some skills and basic education. So, if one wants to start a career as a Radio Jockey, he or she should first complete an undergraduate degree or bachelor’s degree in mass communication.
  • Secondly, an internship can take an aspirant in the right direction as it offers practical exposure.
  • Further, to make progress in this career one should make great professional contacts as referrals work wonders at times. Networking is the key.
  • However, referrals work only when you are great at what you do. This being a highly creative field, some of the qualities required are imagination, wit, out of the box thinking and a voice that can move people. Not necessarily in that order though.

Radio jockeying is an excellent career path for those who enjoy talking, creating and expressing themselves. The following are some of the more common job options for those with a degree in radio jockeying:

  • Announcer: This is the most fundamental radio station position. An announcer is someone who reads commercials and introduces things on the radio. This is the initial position held before being promoted to a higher level.
  • FM/AM Radio Jockeys: FM/AM radio jockeys interact with listeners by either playing music or talking. They usually work for public radio stations.
  • Talk Radio Jockeys: The only job of a talk radio jockey is to talk for the duration of the show and address various social and political issues. They also interact with the audience and viewers of the show.
  • Sports Talk Radio Hosts: They must interact with listeners and discuss various sports news and events. These jockeys are usually ex-athletes, TV anchors, or columnists.
  • Music Director: They are solely in charge of managing and dealing with a radio station’s music library and how music is played when requested during a show. This person is in charge of the music that we hear on the radio.
